A while back I found SeedsNow and became obsessed with this site and all it has to offer. I even decided to become an affiliate and share their products. SeedsNow doesn’t sell or grow anything that has been genetically modified or chemically altered! They have a great selection of seeds, and I am learning so much from their blog!
I recently discovered that they have 6 types of seed for 6 different broccoli plants, and I have loved broccoli every day of my life! Even as a kid! : ) They also have seeds for broccoli sprouts.
I have only grown broccoli once, when I taught gardening at an afterschool ministry at a church in Charlotte. And please don’t think I am a gardening expert just because I was a teacher, 90 percent of the time I have no idea what I am doing, I just do my best, experiment, and google questions or read blogs like the one on SeedsNow. Recently I have been really wanting to grow my favorite foods, like broccoli! This fall if our budget allows, and depending on what is happening with our adoption I would love to purchase and grow these two broccoli types below that I had never seen or heard of!
EARLY PURPLE BROCCOLI! So Pretty! (100% heirloom/non-hybrid/non-GMO)
It is described as extremely flavorful, and extremely easy to grow- it can withstand cold temps!
I can imagine this broccoli looking SO BEAUTIFUL in a salad! I love fresh, colorful food!
I’m not sure if other people get as excited about food and plants as I do, but this broccoli is absolutely dreamy!
ROMANESCO ITALIA BROCCOLI! So cool! ((100% heirloom/non-hybrid/non-GMO))
I don’t even know how to compliment this broccoli… it is just… SO AWESOME!
It is described as having better texture and flavor than other broccoli, and is an heirloom variety from Italy.
It’s geometricness is…. simply magical : ) I don’t think I have ever wanted to describe something as “geometric”, I have probably never even used that word before, and I definitely didn’t expect to follow it up with “MAGICAL”, but how else can I describe something so….. mesmerizing! ITS BROCCOLI HOW IS IT SO MESMERIZING?!
So I now have a dream of a broccoli garden. With all of the varieties, or trying out different types each year along with my favorites. I absolutely love our tiny backyard homestead, but If I ever get my hands on an acre I am going to tear that place up, just food and beautiful things growing, climbing, crawling and sprouting everywhere!
I do love that broccoli likes cool temperatures, I get outside every day now, but when its so hot I have to take a lot of breaks, worry about sunburn, and also my plants just get very dry and crisp. Its always a wonderful change when it cools down, and if I can remember from my one experience growing broccoli, it was pretty chill and easy. I also love that Broccoli is high in vitamin C, and contains nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties.
BOTH of these cool Broccoli are currently on sale! I’m stoked! If I don’t snatch them up they are def going on the wishlist!
There was one more broccoli that I didn’t know existed, Rapini (Raab) Broccoli.(Broccoli Rob?)
It doesn’t have a central head like the others, but it has little shoots, is good for stir frys, and good for the heart!
I usually get the huge bags of frozen organic broccoli from Costco, they have like 4 bags in 1 big bag, and I steam them a little bit in a pot then add some coconut aminos! Or with the Kerry Gold grass-fed butter. You can get the coconut aminos on amazon, but I normally get it from THRIVE MARKET. Super easy, and super delicious! That is my broccoli fix for now, but I am dreaming of the day when I grow my own. : ) It’s always a good time to start gardening and becoming more sustainable, organic, and healthy : )
Go eat you some broccoli!
